So I read this myself cover to cover and I thought- "wow, this is so much like my daughter!" In a lot of ways it helped me remember that the awkward or frustrating things she does are not as random as it seems on the outside. She has so much going through her mind. Though its just a young child's book, I want my daughter's teacher and adult influences to read it so they can realize that my girl just has slug days sometimes and she has so much she is processing every second of the day.
I read it to my 4 year old daughter who is the younger sister of my 7 year old High Functioning Autism daughter. She listened to it very well and I think she was really processing it and hearing it as someone just like her sister. She also got bored after a while. It doesn't have very many exciting parts or fun parts that keep a kids interest.
My HFASD 7 year old wasn't very interested at all. She found it a little boring and didn't care to finish it.
I really like the idea of the book, I love that it was very clear and took the time to explain the characters feelings. I just wish it had a little more to keep a young child interested.

Slug Days Sara Leach Rebecca Bender 9781772780222 Books Reviews

I received this book from #kidlitexchange to read in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. 🌟🌟🌟🌟Slug Days by Sara Leach is a cute read about a girl named Lauren. Lauren struggles with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and has trouble understanding other people. She has good days called butterfly days and bad days called slug days. Slug days only means she didn't grasp an idea or had a rough day coping in school. She compares her feelings to a slug. Slow and slimy. On butterfly days she is happy and the day went well. She has a team of people helping her cope and understand others. Even though Lauren is scared of change a new girl comes to school and becomes Lauren's friend and makes the changes seem so small even though it is a huge impact on Lauren. Everyone has slug days, but to a child with ASD the feelings are magnified.
Lauren has autism spectrum disorder which makes life difficult and confusing for her. She has good days and bad days. She calls her bad days slug days because she feels no one understands or care about her. She is into routines that don't change. when they get changed, she gets very angry. She has to have everything she does perfect such as shoelaces tied with perfect bows. If her shoelaces end in her tying imperfect bows, Lauren must start over until she gets it right. Friendship seems to beyond her ability as she tends to go overboard until the friend can't stand her anymore.

In this story, the author has written a book that shows how difficult it is to live with autism spectrum disorder. She does this with straightforward words. The illustrator does an excellent job making the experience of reading this book easy. I know I learned a lot. Even though this book is written for children, I think it would be beneficial for adults to read it. It's excellent!

Disclaimer I received an arc of this book free from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I was not obliged to write a favorable review, or even any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
Lauren is a young girl with ASD and this book is told from her point-of-view. She has trouble describing her feelings, so she has labelled bad days "slug days" since they make her feel slimy and yucky. Good days she calls "butterfly days."

Reading a book from the POV of someone on the spectrum helps to understand that while we may not understand the reason behind a behavior, it is because they process the world differently. It also encourages compassion for those who struggle to understand and be understood.

As a parent of two children on the spectrum, I feel that this book did a wonderful job in its explanations and viewpoint of Lauren.

I would recommend this highly!!

*Thank you to Sara Leach, the publisher and Netgalley for providing a digital copy in exchange for an honest review.*
