Population Zero Books

This was a very hard book for me to review. I'm not sure if I enjoyed it in the end or not. It had a great premise, good writing and relatable characters but there was just something that I didn't quite care for. I think it did what it was supposed to and make me very uncomfortable. It was just hard to sit back and enjoy it when feeling that way.
The whole story is one that has been argued for a long time. Is the world too overpopulated? Should some people not be allowed to have kids? There is always a fine line between these answers and a lot to debate on both sides of the issues. The main character in this book answers yes to both of those questions and he's on a mission to do something about it.

Population Zero Books Reviews

Three and a half stars, actually. This is a gory, violent story, full of crazy ideas and insanity. But that's why I like it. Many of us wonder why people keep having children when they'd rather do drugs or live a life not meant for children, and Wrath James White gives us a guy who's willing to do something about it.

Todd is an angry man who wants to save the world. Forced sterilization is the theme, but it doesn't always end well. Actually, it never ends well. Can't blame the guy for trying.

He's also a lonely man, and wants his girlfriend back, but she's got a new, same-sex partner, Cathy, who doesn't like Todd. Cathy's a tough gal, ready to defend her lover. But Todd's not backing down, either. Can Todd get his lover back and save the world to boot?
This was a great quick read by one of the masters of hardcore horror the man Wrath James White. If you have already read some of Wrath's work then you know what you are in for here a ride of terror and hardcore madness. As the title suggests this book centers on the problem of our over population of this our planet Earth. Todd the main character is a environmental activist who recently took things a step further in his activism. This book looks at the fragile situation we are facing and shows us what one person does in order to try to save us all. This book is a great social mirror into what is happening to our society and the extremes some go to in order to try to save us. Although we find out Todd is not all right as he might seem. All in all another great one from the hardcore horror man Wrath James White. Keep em coming Sir!!!
White is a consistent author. He consistently finds interesting little tidbits to center distracting stories around, and that is honestly why I keep reading him. In this tiny novel, he fictionalizes a movement that is all too real (although not likely to be a huge threat any time soon) - the eco movement fringe that believes that the only way to save earth is to exterminate the human race either en masse or in as large groups as possible. This is an interesting look at several themes abuse of power, burnout and the possible mental health effects, and how one man can make a difference. I say that last rather tongue in cheek. Those who read this all the way through will understand why, but I don't want to add any major spoilers.

While I did feel that characterization suffered greatly in this book - the characters seemed very one-dimensional and had strangely simple motivations (meeting one of the eco-terrorists in person can lead you to realize their motivations are very, very complex)- it was interesting that the confluence of events in this book carry you past that.

This book is a short read, and while that usually makes me feel sad or disappointed, I was glad that this didn't go on. The ending was perfect for a movie of the week, which is what the entire book felt like. It grips you up for some reason you can't really define, and moves you along, but if they draw it out any further, your interest in the story will drop like a lead weight. I had no desire to find out what happened afterward, and in that matter I rejoiced because I am tired of waiting for followups to novels from authors who draw stories out for ten years.

This was definitely an average effort from the author, not exceedingly great, but still worth reading.
Population Zero by Wrath James White is the novel for those who read Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho and felt like it had been just a bit too tame and watered down.
It's a short book, but it leaves a lasting impression on any reader with a sense of humanity.
We follow Todd, both as a confused adolescent who experiences childhood trauma that would scar anyone and as a cynical adult working for Social Services. In a strange way I found it difficult to avoid relating to Todd in his attitude towards the people he deals with while at work, though his perspective is influenced by extremist environmentalist fear mongering regarding the risks and dangers associated with overpopulation.
That is where the ability to relate to the protagonist ends, as he becomes far more extreme and brutal, his views on humanity following what is, for him, a natural course.
There isn't a climax to this story so much as a precipitous drop into violent, graphic lunacy that comes quick and maintains a slow burn all the way through to the end of the book.
This is only the second of White's books I've had the chance to read, with a collection of his short stories and poetry sitting in my to-read pile, but I will definitely be reading more after that.
This is an author who casually dismisses sentimentality and decency, not for the sake of shocking the reader (it's too coherently structured for that), but because he is plumbing the depths of the horror we human monsters can be capable of...and he does it with style.
