I really liked the storyline and the characters were woven into a rich background of post revolution Napoleonic Wars.

BUT....

The characters get a little absurd with their lack of foresight and their unbelievable stubbornness and that is why I've only given it 3 stars. It would be fair for me to rate it at 3.5 since I skipped over the portions where both male and female lead continuously deny themselves the truth, hide it or run away from it. Was the author trying to make the audience mad? There came a point where that got tiresome. There was such disconnect between the main characters, and their banter was a distraction and not remotely witty or funny, which is a pity because I felt like I could have liked them more. There is more to love than just physical attraction between characters, and with this author we weren't always privy to their inner thoughts but the story was exciting enough to make up for the lack of relationship development.

The story gets jumpy and disjointed at times with flashbacks but not unbearably so. The author tends to enjoy skipping time a lot and if you're not concentrating you could miss something and have to go back and read the previous page/paragraph again.

The typographical and grammatical errors got very annoying. A quick edit-over would fix some of the more distracting and even glaring errors that belittle the story and make it look like an amateur fan-fiction. For shame, editors! Earn your keep!

The plot then gets tied up with an all too neat little bow in the end and for all the richness the author gave us leading up to this point, the villains and their come-uppance really are only granted a single line which is only part of a passing dialogue. An extreme denouement if I ever saw one. For all the detail into the suffering of the lead characters one would think the balance should be to see a confrontation in the end that brings everything to closure. It should have ended with a flourish, but the lackluster ending lends the story a rating of less than 4 stars in my opinion.

Brandywine The Brocade Series Volume 1 Jackie Ivie 9781939820228 Books Reviews

This book is such a unique example of this genre. The young woman has suffered unthinkable abuse in part due to her closeness to the French revolution. What makes if fascinating is the way she reacts, how those around her treat her, and wondering what parts of her behavior and personality are "real" and which are put on. The nobleman who connects with her (in a most unusual way) does not respond like any stock romance character. His individuality and his vulnerability make the unfolding story at times humorous and at others, heart-wrenching.

Ms. Ivie does a little muckraking at the same time. Her depiction of snobbery and classism gets you in the gut, and the depiction of 19th century asylums...aghhh, don't get me started. This book is definitely engaging. I liked her other ones set in the middle ages, so I went for it.
More than once I wanted to stop reading this book, but I kept on reading it, thinking surely this author is going to give this man stronger character, more sense, and backbone, so he can be the alpha male this woman desperately needs. I was so very wrong! I understand Gillian's mistrust of Helena given the situation, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Helena is a victim of the same people who duped him, both mentally and physically, long before she was ever forced into his life, and that just maybe she is not the enemy. What's more, during this era in history women were often enough dubbed insane and placed in psychiatric wards solely on the word of a family member, or husband, who stood to gain something in the way of their own greed and lust, not because of the woman's actual mental illness. The wealthy circles were especially fond of handling "problems" this way, and I find it especially hard to believe that Gillian didn't take that possibility more into consideration as he dismissed her version of why she was even in the asylum to begin with as a lie, and believes her family's version of events. In doing so he then shifts the burden to her to prove she is telling the truth, rather than doubt the very people (family) who tricked him at the alter in more ways than one. Which I find so incredulous considering he immediately disliked her cousin who came to do damage control, but yet he immediately thinks she is lying because THIS COUSIN said she was?

At that point, my opinion of Gillian takes a major nose dive. He becomes just as abusive with his "games" as anyone else in her life has been since she was orphaned. As a reader really wanting to like the HERO, I go from thinking he is just working through the shock of being duped when he thought he was so smart, to REALLY disliking him. Then I find his character downright disgusting, as he actually favors her "Brandy" alter ego over her determined to survive, but fragile Helena "self". Her alter ego is what she used to protect herself from molesters, rapist, and physical abusers, and ends up using against him because he such a nice guy. (sarcasm here) He proceeds to deliberately put her into every stressful situation he could possibly force her into, (and he does force her) including one that puts both of their lives in danger just so he can save his reputation, and prove that she is lying. When they return from that escapade he then basically abandons her for a self imposed pity party in which time her life circumstances change drastically, and when he does return he basically proceeds to have a temper tantrum that borders being a mental melt down worthy of a five year old. Definitely didn't seem like the tears of remorse, and asking for forgiveness and another chance. Worse at one point of this melt down he appeals to "Brandy the alter ego" in one breath, and is making derogatory and disparaging remarks to "Helena the self" in the next. That is abusive!

So, why didn't I flat out give it a one star rating? The book had a promising story line, and the situation unfortunately happened often enough. Helena's character was actually written well, especially as Helena comes to understand some things not through the eyes of a child, but as an adult. The other supporting characters, even the villains, fleshed out well. I especially liked Bridget who championed Helena's story as she took her under her wing, actually listening and believing what she had to say, and offering to be her rock of support. However, even she endured a fair share of verbal abuse from Gillian and his friend. In fact, just about everyone did. Editing was definitely an issue with this book. It isn't the worst editing I have seen, and yet there was one glaring error regarding the word opaque, and the error was made not once, but twice! It's hard to see rouged nipples through opaque material. The other thing, burgundy eyes? I know there is reddish brown eye color, but burgundy...those two colors are drastically different. These two things were annoying enough to keep popping into my thoughts when I would set the book down to do other things.

Read it if you will, but I really hope women understand that just because a person provides you with shelter, clothing, and title doesn't mean they aren't abusive. Abuse is abuse. I will try another one of Jackie Ivie's books, and hopefully, if it's a story about recovering from abuse it will be written more responsibly, and tell a story of someone deserving real love, and finding it. Better yet, it would be nice to tell a story of someone who is capable of stepping up to the plate and going to bat for them! I found this a very disappointing story.
This was a new twist on Regency romance for me (confusing at first), but it grew on me as I read more and more of the story. The heroine, Helene, had devious relatives and lustful “friends” who knew she was an heiress but mistreated her so that they could put in place an imposter. Helene adopted the character of Brandy (a sarcastic jokester) to protect herself during her travails with her “jailers.” Along comes Gillian, who thinks he’s marrying the imposter but instead marries a woman with a veil that hides her face (Brandy/Helene). The unusual “courtship” that occurs between Gil and Helene after their marriage was humorous and sad at times, but there was a happy-ever-after at the end and the imposter got her comeuppance. Yea!
